Sunday 7 March 2010

08:00 - 12:00 Workshop A: Translating the Soft Landings Framework into a specific project using costing and programming tools: Introduction to the BSRIA "Pitstopping" reality-checking methodology

This workshop will introduce BSRIA’s facilitated reality-checking “pitstopping” methodology that operates within the Soft Landings process. It will explain the roles and responsibilities of parties in the supply chain, from the client to the building’s enduser. This session will draw on worked examples to demonstrate how to identify potential pitfalls with technology. You will learn how to identify areas that require greater attention at handover and fine-tuning thereafter.

Benefits of attending:

  • Discover a basic reality-checking system that you can apply and adapt for your own project
  • Find out how to respond effectively to a client's requirement for a project by adopting Soft landings
  • Learn how to reduce costly re-work for systems that prove problematic during initial operation

Workshop leader:

Roderic Bunn
Construction Industry Sustainability Analyst
BSRIA UK

13:00 - 17:00 Workshop B: Optimising building energy use and consumption

This workshop will examine approaches to building energy use and consumption. This session will consider strategic energy management techniques that surmount the practical challenges of sustainable building efficiency. Explore macro and micro level elements of multi-building and whole building sites, while taking a holistic approach to achieving optimal energy levels in line with demand.

Benefits of attending:

  • Benchmark your current energy use strategies to improve your current practices
  • Improve your energy and consumption performance
  • Overcome challenges presented by implementation of strategic initiatives

Wednesday 10 March 2010

08:00 - 12:00 Workshop C: Sustainable facilities management: Managing the facility and its stakeholders

This workshop will provide a unique insight into facilites management from an experienced regional practitioner. Facilites mangement is in the forefront of delivering sustainable asset management and building performance. This session will explore challenges presented by the impact that users have in the alignment of FM practice and the sustainability agenda.

Benefits of attending:

  • Discover strategies that have worked in this region and apply best practice to your projects
  • Gain more control of your facilities performance and ability to deliver on ROI predictions
  • Collect the knowledge you will require in order to create comprehensive sustainable facilities management strategies

Workshop leader:

Douglas Masuku
Performance Manager
Emaar Malls Group

13:00 - 17:00 Workshop D: Developing whole life cost estimates

This workshop will examine the background to Whole Life Costing and emerging standards from around the world to develop whole life cost estimates. It will then look at the uses to which these cost estimates can be put: - benchmarking against similar construction, value engineering and the trade-off between capital cost and delayed expenditure on operations and maintenance. The workshop will also look at the spin-off from whole life cost estimates in terms of measuring embedded carbon and carbon generated during the lifespan and disposal of built assets.

Benefits of attending:

  • Gain an understanding of the principles of Whole Life Costing through worked examples.
  • Identify the applications of Whole Life Cost data and its use in decision-making in the design and construction processes.
  • Experience demonstrations of specialist software estimating Whole Life Cost and Carbon generation.
